Professional career
International corporate counsel at Royal Philips Electronics (1971-1975), at Royal DSM (1976-1988) and at Akzo Nobel (1989-2007). From 1999 till his retirement in 2007 Jan Eijsbouts served as Group General Counsel and Corporate Director Legal affairs of Akzo Nobel. In 2010 he was appointed Extraordinary Professor of CSR and Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Corporate law, Governance and Innovation Policies of the Law Faculty at Maastricht University. His responsibilities included the development and coordination of and teaching in the core course CSR in the International Master Globalisation and Law. Since his Emeritus position end of 2015 he serves as Honorary Professor.

In the above capacities Jan Eijsbouts advised the Board of Management, the Supervisory Board and senior business management on all legal aspects of corporate governance, complex international business, corporate (re)structuring and M & A transactions (including the responsibility for all legal aspects of the public takeovers of Nobel Industries AB, Courtaulds plc and ICI plc and the sale of the Fibers Division Acordis to private equity firm CVC and the sale of the Pharmaceutical Division Organon Biosciences to Schering Plough Corp). Capital market operations, securities listings and transactions, competition and environmental law issues as well as international conflict management and litigation all formed an important part of the work through his years of corporate counseling. His responsibilities as General Counsel included the management of the Legal and IP functions of the group worldwide. As General Counsel he was the chairman of Akzo Nobel’s Corporate Compliance and Disclosure Committees. He was member of AkzoNobel’s CSR Advisory Committee and he designed and coordinated Akzo Nobel’s major antitrust remediation and compliance program.

Other engagements
Jan Eijsbouts has been a member of the Dutch Association of Company Jan Eijsbouts has been a member of the Dutch Association of Company Lawyers since 1973. He acted as secretary of the Environmental law section, as Vice-chair/Secretary of the Competition law section and as Chair of the Dispute resolution section. Since 2002 he has been active in various capacities in the International Bar Association (IBA); 2004/2005 Co-Chair of the Corporate Counsel Forum (CCF), 2005 – 2009 CCF liaison officer on the Council of the Legal Practice Division IBA 2007/2008 Co-Chair of the IBA and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee.

He served as member of the Legal Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands (chair 1997 – 2003), of the European Advisory Committee of CPR, New York (1996 – 2008) and of the Lex Mundi Client Advisory Board (2004 – 2007). He was Chairman of the Board of the World Legal Forum Foundation (The Hague, NL, 2009-2018)

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Mentor Group (Boston, USA), of the International Advisory Board of the CEELI Institute (Prague, Czech Republic), and of the Public-Private Network of the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law, HiiL, The Hague). He is Project Manager at the International Working Group on Business and Human Rights Arbitration’s Drafting Team of the Hague BHR International Arbitration Rules.

Jan Eijsbouts received the Royal Distinction Officer in the Order of Oranje Nassau.
